AATC Youth Track: News and Updates for Friday June 1 [Week #7 of 16]

1 Jun 2018 by Aramide Pinheiro-Boatswain

All,

Here is some news and updates for Friday June 1 [Week 7 of 16]

DEXTER-ANN ARBOR RUN — VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED

The annual “Dexter Ann Arbor Run” takes place this weekend Saturday-Sunday, June 2-3. This is the club’s largest fund-raiser and provides most of the funding for the youth-division:

- There is a Kids Run Saturday afternoon June 2 at Skyline High School (2552 North Maple Rd — Ann Arbor’s far northwest side).
We will need around 5 volunteers. The Kids’ Run starts at 3 PM that day — please contact me if you can help. Our little ones can help, too.
The Skyline High school track is located off N Maple Rd, just north-west of the school building.

- The youth division will staff a water-station (as we’ve done every year) Sunday morning June 3 (just north of downtown Ann Arbor) for the 5K run, 10K run and the 1/2 Marathon. We will need around 30 volunteers from 6:30 AM – 12 PM to hand out water to the runners as they go by — please contact me if you can help. Our little ones can help, too and they will enjoy it !!

For those who have volunteered to help on Sunday, we will meet at the “T-intersection” of Huron-View and N Main Streets, about a mile or so north of downtown Ann Arbor. The roads near this location will closed and barricaded for vehicle traffic at 7 PM, so please arrive before 7 PM (preferably at 6:30 PM). This year, no volunteer shirts will be given out, so everyone should wear their Track club T-shirts, fan-wear and uniforms. Refreshments will be provided — courtesy of the DX-AA Race Committee. I will bring tents in case it rains on Sunday.

For those who want to register to race in the Dexter Ann Arbor Run, please visit http://dxa2.com/ by today Friday, June 1 (before online registration closes).

NEXT TRACK MEET

Our next track meet is the annual “Kankakee Track Club International Invite”, which will be held Saturday June 9. Please note that the meet has been moved from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais IL (which is where it was held last year) back to Kankakee High School in nearby kankakee (which is where it was held the year before) — five miles from Bourbonnais. This year’s meet will have an international flavor, so it was renamed from the “Just Kickin’ Invitational’ to the Kankakee Track Club International Invite”. The Kankakee Track Club is still the host club organizing the meet, like last year.

The meet information is here:

NOTE: I have to register all athletes competing in this meet by next Thursday night June 7. So please let me know before then if your kids are competing. I’ll take of the rest and handle the registration (neither AAU or USATF memberships are required).

So far I have:

Robert Lamb
Imani Blair
Mya Georgiadis
Kamari Ronfeldt
Sunil Dhakal
Buturo Bartolomei
Gabriela Anderson

I have reserved 15 rooms in the following hotel:

Hampton Inn Bourbonnais Kankakee
64 Ken Hayes Drive, Bourbonnais, IL 60914
T: 1 815-933-3800

Each room has two (2) queen beds, for check-in Friday night June 8 for 1 night (total: $98.12 including tax).Breakfast is included.
Just as in the case with the Columbus meet, the club will pay for the coaches’ rooms. Everyone else has to pay for their own. Some of the rooms have been set aside for the coaches — the rest will be assigned to families on a “first come, first serve” basis.

So far, I’m holding rooms for the following families (in addition to the coaches):

Lamb
Blair
Georgiadis
Ronfeldt
Winkler/Dhakal
Anderson

So if you need a room, please contact me. Kankakee is roughly a 4.5 hour drive from Ann Arbor, so it’s best for all athletes and their families to drive in the night before the meet, regardless of what events they have.

PARTICIPATION FEES – OVERDUE

Participation fees were due last Thursday May 17. You can pay with cash or check at track practice (make checks payable to “AATC”), or you can pay online at http://www.aatrackclub.com/youth/signup.php (a transaction fee of $2.95 per kid applies). Please note that if you have two or more kids, there’s a $25 discount for each kid after the first kid. So if you have three (3) kids, you’ll get $50 in total discounts.

SCHOOL TRACK SUCCESS STORIES

A number of our athletes are running track for their respective middle-schools and high-schools. I would like to hear how their school track seasons are going. So please feel free to share your kids’ success stories and reply to my e-mail, or you can share them on the Team App.

TRACK PRACTICES MOVING TO PIONEER HIGH SCHOOL NEXT WEEK

We will move track practices from the old University of Michigan outdoor track (Ferry Field) to the Pioneer High School track, starting next Wednesday, June 6. Track practices will still start at 6:30 PM (for a couple more weeks). We will have the use of the Pioneer High School high jump equipment as well as their hurdles. Pioneer High School is just 1 mile southwest of Ferry Field. The track is located off Main Street, about 1/2 mile south of Stadium Blvd, just to the west of (and behind) the football stadium. There is plenty of parking — the visitor parking lot is also off Main Street, right near the football stadium and the track. There is also plenty of bleacher seating at the Pioneer High School track.

Please note we will shift the track practice start time 1/2 hour later beginning Monday, June 18. So track practices for the Rec & Ed group will then be from 7-8:30 PM, and track practices for the Travel Team will then be from 7-9 PM.
